Luna di seta for Alto Flute (2012)

Instrumentation: Alto Flute

Program Note:

Luna di seta (2012) for Alto Flute, was inspired by the strikingly beautiful and elusive Luna Moth (acias luna). The form of this piece loosely follows its life as a caterpillar, which music pass through five instars before metamorphosis and maturity. Does the earth-bound caterpillar dream of flight?

Many thanks to Melanie Sorenson and Brian Amer for their artistic support.

Variations on a Tune for Kaisa for String Quartet (2011)

Variation 1

Variation 2 - Fountains (Bubbling)

Variation 3 - Triste (Slow)

Variation 4 - Wild!

Variation 5 - Funky

Program Note:

Variations on a Tune for Kaisa (2011) for string quartet, was composed for Marian Tanau and the American-Romanian Festival's Fusion Project; it was premiered in Ann Arbor, Michigan on April 18, 2011 at Tappan Middle School. The Fusion Project brings musicians, artists and composers to schools for demonstrations on how everyday objects and places can inspire the creation of new art and music, while encouraging the students to create their own art.

I have sung the lullaby tune, which provides the backbone of the piece, to my daughter Kaisa almost every day of her life. It's been used to comfort her at bed time, soothe boo boos, and even when a good laugh has been needed.

The set of variations were inspired by the photographer Donald Jones, whose photographs explore urban scenes, natural landscapes, and political activities around Southeast Michigan. A beautiful photograph of Jones' daughter led me to think of my own daughter and the tune that has provided a backdrop in her life. Other photographs by Jones provide the character for each movement. They include a snapshot of a child in a fountain, a carnival ride and a clown on his way home from work.

A World of Sighs for Mixed Chorus (2010)

Instrumentation: SSSAAATTTBBB

Text: Compiled by the Composer from William Shakespeare, Othello

Program Note:

A World of Sighs (2010) for mixed chorus, weaves together texts from different characters in William Shakespeare’s play, Othello. “Willow,” the song Desdemona sings just moments before her death, is set against Othello’s words of love for his wife, as well as the scheming interjections of Iago. The willow tree traditionally symbolizes disappointed love, while the sycamore represents the dejected lovers.

Many thanks for: Mark Munson, Ann Corrigan, Kristin Kuster, and Brian Amer for their artistic support.

Souvenirs for Piano (2006)

Instrumentation: Piano

Mementos: Passacaglia for a Sunny Day, Cold, Rainy Day, Samba!

Miniatures: Floating, Nocturne, Haunted House, Sorrow

Dance Suite: Prelude, Dance for the Sun, Tangential Tango, Hydroelectric Slide

Program Note:

Souvenirs for Piano Solo is a set of graduated pieces (intermediate to advanced) for students of the piano. In order to create a sense of cohesion between the movements, I divided the work into three smaller pieces: Mementos, Miniatures, and Dance Suite. The movements which make up Mementos focus on developing the left hand as an independent voice and melodic instrument. All of movements of Miniatures are based on the same fluid 12-tone row. Have no fear! The purpose of this is not to scare the student away from new music, rather, I wish to help the student adjust to the sound of dissonance and to begin to recognize how composers' use these sounds to create musical tension and release. The Dance Suite introduces tricky counterpoint and works to develop agility. I have found that dance movements help the student feel the ebb and flow of the music in their own body which in turn informs their interpretation of the piece. The 2006 commissioned work is funded by Music Teachers' National Association (MTNA) and the Iowa MTA.
