Troy Savings Bank Music Hall
Troy, New York
Sunday, 20 May 2012 - 7:30 PM
Legendary conductor George Szell proclaimed the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall the most acoustically perfect concert hall in the nation. This concert will feature eight newly commissioned works by young composers, all celebrating the grand legacy of one of the world’s great concert halls.

“If These Walls Could Sing”
The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall opened its doors on April 19th, 1875, celebrating the hundredth anniversary of the battles of Lexington and Concord – the “shot heard ’round the world.” Conductor George Szell proclaimed the hall the most acoustically perfect concert hall in the nation. This concert will feature eight new commissioned works by young composers, all celebrating the grand legacy of one of the world’s great concert halls. In keeping of the theme of celebrating the Hall, the concert will feature solo, chamber and large ensemble works all played throughout the hall – antiphonally from the balconies and in the lobbies as well as on the stage – all taking their inspiration from the countless legendary artists who have performed in the hall and the composers (some famous, some forgotten) whose names adorn the doors to the boxes. The concert is sponsored by the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall Foundation.

The concert will include a “behind the scenes” tour of this architectural and cultural treasure. Tours will begin at 5:30PM at the Music Hall. You must have a ticket to enter the Hall for a tour.

In addition, the concert will feature a world-premiere performance by the Doyle Middle School Band and Chorus of a work co-composed with Missy Mazzoli. Students at the middle school have been working with Missy for seven months to write a piece inspired by the great history of Troy, NY and the magnificent Music Hall. Check out the project blog.
